Are The Professional Teeth Whitening Home Kits Effective?

Are The Professional Teeth Whitening Home Kits Effective?

December 1, 2019

Did you know 32% of the adult population are actively seeking ways to brighten their teeth? So, you are not alone. Today, we have several whitening products available and they fall into two categories; over-the-counter whitening kits and professional ones. So, which one is better?

We understand the urge to buy over-the-counter teeth whitening kits; they are cheap and convenient. However, as easily attainable as they may be, OTC teeth whitening kits are not effective. Not only will they not whiten your teeth, but you risk the chance of developing gum irritation.

At Quad Dental we advocate for professional whitening as it is safe and the dentist can regulate the whitening agent. If you are not a fan of in-office teeth whitening, we got you covered; we also offer professional teeth whitening kits to use at home.

What Are Professional Teeth Whitening Kits?

Unlike over-the-counter teeth whitening kits, our professional ones are designed to fit your specific dental needs. Our dental team designs personalized whitening kits to help brighten your teeth.

Yes, just like the store-bought whitening kits, our professional whitening kits contain peroxide, but in favorable amounts that won’t hurt or irritate your gums.

How Are the Whitening Kits Prepared?

During your dental appointment, the dentist will assess your teeth health and record your initial teeth shade for comparison for when the treatment is done.

Next, a dental impression of your upper and lower jaw will be taken using a non-toxic material and sent to the lab. It will take around one to two weeks for the tray to be complete.

In your second consultation, the dentist will show you how to use the trays for better results.

How to Use the Whitening Kits?

Before applying the whitening solution, you should brush and floss to remove any food particles. Next, apply the peroxide solution on your teeth avoiding the gums and wear the dental trays.

Most teeth whitening kits are designed to be used one hour every day for two weeks, but, at Quad Dental, we offer overnight kits instead.

After the second week, the dentist will schedule a follow-up session to monitor how the treatment is progressing, and if need be an additional solution may be given.

Don’t eat or drink 30 minutes before or after the treatment to ensure you get the best results.

Is There Any Side Effect?

Yes. You may develop teeth sensitivity and gum irritation if the peroxide solution gets in contact with your gums.

How Long Will the Teeth Whitening Results Last?

The results vary depending on your dental habits. However, on average, the results can last for nine months. With time, though, the teeth may start to discolor and that’s why we recommend regular teeth whitening and cleaning to keep the teeth white and healthy.

Can My Dental Restorations Be Whitened?

Sadly, no they can’t. Once dental restorations like veneers, bridges, and crowns are fixed, the color can’t be changed. It is advisable to get teeth whitening before you have the restoration procedure done.

How Can I Maintain My Teeth White?

Although teed discoloration is inevitable because of uncontrolled factors such as age, there are a few things you can try to keep your teeth clean:

  • Your dental hygiene plays a focal point in keeping your teeth white, so brush your teeth and gum and use an antiseptic mouthwash
  • Limit smoking and alcohol intake
  • Avoid overconsumption of coffee, tea, and cola
  • Get regular dental checkups. We recommend twice a year for optimal dental health

If you feel that the professional whitening home kits are not sufficient, you can come for the in-office dental treatment. It is more expensive compared to the rest of the whitening options, but on the upside, they offer the best results in a relatively short time. Keep in mind though, you will need more than one dental visit to attain the best results.
