Caring for Your New Smile After Invisalign Treatment

Caring for Your New Smile After Invisalign Treatment

January 1, 2019

Got your life changing smile with Invisalign treatment. But it’s not like once you got your Invisalign treatment the process is over, you need to ask your dentist about the post care to maintain the newly straightened teeth.

What Will My Retainers Look Like?

Once your treatment is complete you’ll be given fixed and removable retainers. Before you stop wearing your Invisalign braces your dentist will fit a discreet fixed retainer behind your teeth, which will permanently hold them in place and will provide removable retainers to use after removing the permanent ones.

Why Do I Need to Wear a Retainer After Orthodontic Treatment?

Your Invisalign aligners exert a gentle pressure that shifts the teeth into place according to treatment. The forces from your aligners cause changes all the way through your supporting tissues, from the teeth, to the periodontal ligaments that hold them, the bone, and then the gums. Once the force is gone, the teeth have a tendency to want to shift back to their old places. The perfect solution is to wear retainers post treatment. A retainer holds the teeth in the desired position and this minimizes age-related changes and lets the gums, bone and periodontal ligaments reorganize around the teeth.

Will I Need to Wear Retainers All the Time?

Post Invisalign treatment, your family dentist will recommend you to wear retainers all the time. Once your teeth and bone are settled then wearing retainers only at night will suffice.

How Long Will I Need to Wear Retainers?

The duration varies according to the treatment. Some may have to wear for only few hours while some might have to wear it full time.

How Will My Retainer Affect My Everyday Life?

Just like the Invisalign aligners, the retainers are comfortable, strong and unobtrusive in appearance. You can go about your routine without any hindrance.
